There has been no junior high school/middle school open in the neighborhood since 2008, when Shaw Junior High School closed. A new school was to be built on the Rhode Island Avenue site of the old school, but despite a $54 million budget being in place for years, ground has never been broken.
The DCPS boundary realignment plan proposed a Center City Middle School to serve students from neighborhoods in Wards 1, 2, 5 and 6, and the old Shaw Junior High School site is the obvious location.
Pressing the new DCPS chancellor to commit to a schedule for building the new school and obtaining the capital funding for construction from the Bowser administration will be the top priority for my tenth term.
